DRUG ISSUE

by Skip La Cour

Let’s face it, physique-enhancing drugs are illegal. They are condemned not only by righteous, drug-free bodybuilding organizations, but also by local and federal government. The bottom line is, if we want to be respected as bodybuilders, illegal drugs must be removed from our sport. Period!

If you are a noncompetitive bodybuilder, I believe you should not even entertain the idea of using drugs. The gains you will make with drugs will only be there as long as you use them, you probably won’t want to spend money on them forever, you will have to worry about your health, and you will have to worry about the law. All for what? Just to be the biggest guy around? Believe me, there will always be someone bigger. Instead, you should focus your attention on learning what it takes to build your body without them.

If you are a competitive bodybuilder, you should already know that this sport is for the genetically elite. If you do not have an awesome structure to begin with, it doesn’t matter which ones or how much drugs you take. You will only achieve so much success. Whether success to you is winning your local show or winning the nationals, you need to ask yourself if it is really worth it. If really have what it takes to become a professional, you should be able to do extremely well as a drug-free bodybuilder first. Even then, I would never recommend anyone taking drugs -- especially not to someone who has not taken the time to learn what they are doing in the gym and at the dinner table first.

No one should use illegal drugs. But the solution to this problem is unfortunately not that simple. It is inevitable that some people, by human nature, will not always obey the law. If there is an easier way to get the job done, regardless of its legality, some people will use the easier route.

This hurts not only the chemically assisted bodybuilder, but everyone involved in the sport – including natural bodybuilders.

Contrary to what many natural bodybuilders like to tell themselves, drugs in bodybuilding do indeed taint the sport for us also. Unfortunately, when you develop a certain amount of size or muscularity, the first assumption made – by other natural bodybuilders, drug-using bodybuilders, and the general public -- is that you are using illegal drugs to achieve such a physique.

The wrong perception is ingrained in our bodybuilding community. Too many people training in the gyms today never discover what they are truly capable of achieving naturally, or they immediately start using drugs because they firmly believe it is impossible to build a truly great physique without them.

What will it take to bring respectability to the sport of bodybuilding and its participants? Where is the solution that will help us overcome the terrible drug stereotype that the general public has against us – and we have amongst ourselves? What evidence will bodybuilders around the world need to believe that they can develop a good physique without drugs?

In my opinion, finding the solution to these problems will need three stages: the proliferation of outstanding natural bodybuilders and, second, a certain amount of time for the process to evolve. Then the new, higher standard that has been created must be accepted as really being drug free.

This web page is my effort to spread the information and the "secrets" from my discoveries and also from the very best natural bodybuilders and leaders in training, nutrition, and supplementation. I feel privileged to have spoken with them on a regular basis over the years so I can bring this information to you.

This web page is my attempt to improve our sport by increasing the number of outstanding drug-free bodybuilders – both competitive and noncompetitive – around the globe.

As I see it, drug-free bodybuilders should be living, walking, breathing examples that training naturally is the only way to train. We can influence more people by what we accomplish rather than by we say. I believe we natural bodybuilders need to lighten up on passing judgment of those using drugs. We should leave that job to Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

You can persuade others to train naturally more effectively by demonstrating the tremendous benefits -- and they will want to enjoy them also. No one is going to be effective simply by telling other people what they should and should not do. You won’t and I won’t -- especially if we are not very good! But if we can become so outstanding, we can convince others that they can do the same. And, more importantly, they will want to do the same.

It’s up to you to use all the information available to you to become an outstanding natural bodybuilder! That, in my opinion, is the best way we individually can improve the sport of bodybuilding and eventually rid it of drugs.
