Lesson 28: Why Getting Ripped Won’t Fix Your Marriage—But Still Might Save Your Life – 30 Lessons In 30 Days

My name is Skip La Cour, and I want to thank you for joining me on this journey.

This is lesson #28 of my 30 Lessons in 30 Days, and it might just be the most important one yet. I want to take a step back from the sets, reps, and calories—the technical side of fitness—and speak directly to your heart, mind, and soul.

Because if you’re like most of the men I coach… this isn’t really about just fitness.
It’s about finding something deeper.

Over the last 36 years, I’ve helped men build muscle, lose body fat, and live longer, healthier lives. For the last 9 years, I’ve worked exclusively with older men who lead busy, productive lives. Men like you. Men who’ve built businesses, raised families, stayed married for decades, provided for others, and held it all together—even when the pressure was high and the reward uncertain.

Men who have everything… except control over their own bodies.

Today, I want explain why fitness could be the key to control in an out-of-control life.

Fitness Is About More Than the Mirror

I want to be straight with you: if all you’re chasing is abs or a scale number, you’re going to burn out.

That’s not because those goals aren’t worthwhile. They are.
But most of the men I coach, they come to me for something bigger.

They want their bodies to reflect the man they know they are inside.

They’ve spent years giving their time, energy, and passion to other people. Their family. Their work. Their employees. Their community. They’ve lived up to their responsibilities. But somewhere along the line, they put themselves last. And now, in their 50s, 60s, or beyond… it’s catching up.

Their body isn’t just out of shape—it feels like a betrayal.

But here’s the truth: It’s not too late. You can take it back.

And when you do? You’ll realize that this journey isn’t just about muscle—it’s about reclaiming control in a life that feels more and more uncertain every day.

One Man’s Painful Wake-Up Call

Let me tell you about one client I’ll never forget. He was a successful business owner. Hardworking. Generous. The kind of guy everyone looked up to.

He called me because he’d taken his employees—and their families—on an all-expenses-paid trip to Mexico. He said most of them had never been on a vacation like that. He was proud of what he’d built, and proud of how he was giving back.

But then they got to the pool.

He kept his shirt on.

And in that moment, he felt something change. Whether it was real or just in his mind, he believed that the respect he’d earned through years of hard work vanished the second they saw his body.

He told me, “I don’t think they saw me the same after that.”

That moment haunted him.
That feeling of being exposed—not just physically, but emotionally.

And yet… he didn’t follow through.
He came to me for one session. Then disappeared. Too busy. Too distracted. Too overwhelmed.

And still haunted.

I don’t want that to be your story.

Why You Need Structure—Now More Than Ever

There’s a reason you feel drawn to fitness right now.
There’s a reason you can’t shake that nagging thought in the back of your head.

It’s not just about the mirror.
It’s about gaining control in a life that feels increasingly out of control.

Think about it.

  • You can’t predict what your business will look like in five years.

  • You can’t control what your kids do when they’re out of the house.

  • You can’t fix your marriage with a snap of your fingers.

  • You can’t guarantee you’ll stay healthy as you age.

But you can control:

  • When you wake up.

  • What you eat.

  • When you train.

  • How you sleep.

  • How you hydrate.

  • How you treat your body.

That structure gives you something most men are secretly desperate for: a sense of peace and certainty.

And once you have that, it bleeds into everything else.

You think more clearly.
You manage stress better.
You stop snapping at your wife and kids.
You show up with more energy at work.
You walk into a room with your chest out and your head held high.

This is the real gift of fitness—and it’s why I coach men on far more than just their workouts.

The Truth About Coaching and Why It Matters

I coach men every single day.
Seven days a week, I get on calls with men who are just like you.

And let me be clear: coaching is not about hiring someone to yell at you or guilt you into following a diet plan.

Coaching is about understanding what you’re really after, building a plan around your real life—not some fantasy version—and helping you stay connected to your reason why.

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, “This isn’t who I am,”
If you’ve ever gotten dressed and avoided your reflection,
If you’ve ever felt like your body is the only part of your life that doesn’t reflect your discipline and your values…

Then it’s time to stop trying to do this alone.

You’ve already proven you’re capable.
Now let me help you become complete.

Reach out to me. Let’s get this thing handled.

Fitness Is the Life Raft—Not the Yacht

Here’s the part most fitness influencers don’t understand—because they haven’t lived enough life to get it.

Fitness is not the answer to every problem.
It’s a tool. A weapon. A structure.

But it’s not going to fix your marriage.
It’s not going to reconnect you to your kids.
It’s not going to heal your loneliness, or turn around your business.

What it can do is give you the strength, energy, and discipline to tackle those problems with renewed fire.

So don’t confuse the gym for your savior.
Use it as your anchor.
Let it remind you that you’re not done yet.
Let it make you stronger, mentally and physically.
Let it sharpen you. Refine you. Prepare you for what’s next.

So, Why Are You Really Doing This?

You’ve been a great husband.
You’ve raised amazing kids.
You’ve built something from nothing.

You didn’t get there by accident.

You did it because something in you burned. A reason. A “why.”
And even if you didn’t always say it out loud, you felt it.

Well, now it’s time to apply that same fire to your body.
Not because you’re shallow.
Not because you want to impress strangers.
But because this body is the vehicle that will carry you through the final decades of your life.

Don’t treat it like an afterthought.

And if you’re not sure what your “why” is yet, that’s okay.
Sometimes, you find it on the journey.

But if you’re ready to start—if you’re ready to feel like a man whose body matches his strength, his values, and his legacy—then I’m ready to help you.

Lesson #29 drops tomorrow.
But today?
Let this one sit. Let it sink in.

And when you’re ready—reach out.
You’ve carried everyone else for long enough.

Now it’s your turn.
