Why Most Older Men Struggle to Get Lean and Look Their Best
After 36 years in fitness and nearly a decade of coaching older men exclusively, I’ve seen this struggle time and time again. You work hard in the gym, build muscle, fill out that extra-large shirt, and enjoy the feeling of being “big.” It’s a sign of strength, discipline, and the years of work you’ve put into lifting weights. But here’s the harsh reality most men don’t want to face:
You might not be as muscular as you think—you might just be carrying extra body fat.
I get it. Nobody wants to hear that. But if your goal is to look your best, then you have to understand the difference between being big and being lean.
Why Most Men Struggle with Getting Lean
Many older men know that dropping body fat will make them look more muscular, more defined, and healthier. But every time they try to lose weight, they run into the same issue:
- Their shirts don’t fit as snugly anymore.
- They don’t “fill out” their XL size the same way.
- People start asking, “Hey, are you losing weight? You’re looking kinda skinny.”
And that kills their confidence. Suddenly, they feel like they’re shrinking, losing their hard-earned muscle. They panic and start eating more, afraid of getting “too small.”
But here’s what they don’t realize:
The “Size” You’re Losing Wasn’t Muscle—It Was Fat
A lot of that fullness in your arms, shoulders, and chest isn’t muscle—it’s subcutaneous fat (the fat stored under your skin) and intramuscular fat (fat within the muscle). It’s an illusion of size, and once you drop it, you’ll reveal the actual muscle you’ve built.
When you get lean:
✅ Your muscles look more separated and defined.
✅ You look more athletic, healthier, and younger.
✅ Your muscle bellies appear fuller, even if they’re technically smaller in size.
✅ You don’t need to be shredded with a six-pack—just a lower body fat percentage will make you look significantly better.

The Mental Battle: Stop Associating Size with Strength
Most older men have spent decades equating being big with being strong and masculine. And when that “size” starts disappearing, it triggers an identity crisis. But here’s what I tell my coaching clients:
👉 The leaner you are, the more impressive you’ll look. You don’t need an XL shirt to command attention—your muscle definition will do that for you.👉 Losing fat isn’t losing progress—it’s revealing your hard work.
👉 Stop letting other people’s comments throw you off. The guy calling you “skinny” has no idea what he’s talking about.
