The Wake-Up Call for Older Men
As a coach who works with older men—many of whom have built impressive careers, raised amazing families, and created a great life—I see a common theme. These men have crushed it in many areas, but now in their 50s (or older), they’re sick and tired of the way they look and feel. They want to take control of their health and finally build the body they deserve.
They come to me ready to go all-in. They’re fired up and motivated. But more often than not, they immediately zero in on the workouts. “What’s the best training split?” “How many sets and reps should I be doing?” “Is this the right routine for fat loss?”
These are valid questions, but here’s the truth: the transformation they’re after doesn’t begin with training. It starts with what they put in their mouth.
Nutrition First, Workouts Second
Yes, I know you’ve heard it before: “Nutrition is more important than training.” But the difference with the men I coach is that they finally live that lesson. Even though many smart, motivated men intellectually agree that eating is important, they don’t fully understand how big of a role it plays. They say, “Yeah, I watch what I eat,” but their actions rarely match the standard necessary to change their body.
They’re instinctively avoiding certain foods or just “eating clean,” but that isn’t enough. Not even close. Their body fat won’t budge, and they wonder what they’re doing wrong.
Why Extreme Diets Work (Until They Don’t)
Most people jump on extreme diets—keto, carnivore, fasting—because they want quick results. These diets deliver fast weight loss, but it’s often due to water loss and depleted glycogen, not true fat loss. Worse yet, they are almost never sustainable.
Sure, they work short term. But then what? Once you go back to your normal life—your business, your family, your commitments—you can’t stick to that seven-day-a-week gym schedule or restrictive diet.
What happens then? You backslide. Hard.

The Power of a Sustainable Approach
When you train and eat the right way from the start, even if the results come slower, you’re learning habits and systems that will last for the rest of your life. That’s what I teach my one-on-one coaching clients.
Most of the men I work with initially under-eat. They think they’re eating the right amount, but when I finally get them to count calories (which they often resist), it turns out they’re eating around 1,200 calories per day. This is too low and completely unsustainable.
When I get them to increase to 2,500 or 2,800 calories, they feel uncomfortable at first. They feel like they’re stuffing themselves. But by day 6 or 7, the magic starts to happen. Their metabolism kicks in. They feel better. They get stronger. They sleep better. They have more energy. Their body starts to burn fat more effectively.
The Scale Is Not the Judge
The scale messes with your head. You might gain 3 pounds when you start eating more. But that weight isn’t fat—it’s glycogen and water filling your muscles again. You feel fuller, your muscles pop more, and your metabolism hums. After a few weeks, your body fat drops, and your clothes fit differently—especially around the waist. That’s the progress that matters.
I have my clients weigh themselves every morning and every night. Why? To show them how weight naturally fluctuates and to teach them what real progress looks like. You can be doing everything right and still see scale numbers bounce. That’s normal. Once they understand this, they’re no longer ruled by the scale.
What Real Fat Loss Looks Like
Fat loss happens in waves. You might hover at 180 lbs for weeks, then suddenly drop to 177. That’ll be your new set point for a while. Then one day, it drops again to 173. It’s not a steady line down. But with the right habits, you’ll be leaner, stronger, more energized—and eating more food than you were when you started.
The irony? You’ll be 40 pounds lighter and eating more than when you were stuck and frustrated. That’s what real transformation looks like. That’s the difference between short-term results and lifelong mastery.
What Happens Without Guidance
Without a coach, most men give up. They quit when it doesn’t feel right, even when they’re doing everything right. They blame themselves instead of the bad plan they were given. Or worse, they get good information but don’t have the support to follow through.
I can’t tell you how many men I’ve worked with who were doing the right things, but felt like they were losing because their expectations were out of whack. They were winning but didn’t know it. And they almost gave up.
Summary:
- Most older men overemphasize workouts and underestimate nutrition.
- Extreme diets offer fast but unsustainable results.
- Sustainable fat loss starts by eating more of the right foods.
- Your metabolism and energy improve with proper nourishment.
- The scale lies. True fat loss takes time and happens in waves.
- Without the right expectations, men quit too early.
- Real success = eating more, feeling better, looking great for life.
