Hi, I’m Skip La Cour—and welcome to Lesson #11 of my 30 Lessons in 30 Days series. These lessons come from a lifetime of personal experience, decades of training, and—maybe more importantly—countless one-on-one conversations with men just like you and me. Men who are a little bit older. Men who want to get fit, stay strong, and live a high-quality life… but who struggle with staying motivated to actually do it.
This isn’t just about the best workout or the perfect diet plan. It’s about how to follow through. It’s about how to actually get yourself to do what you already know you need to do. And that’s what today’s lesson is all about.
So… How Do You Stay Motivated When You’re Older?
Let’s be honest. You already know you need to work out. You know that eating right is crucial to being healthy, having more energy, and living longer. Maybe you want to lose body fat you’ve been carrying around for years. Maybe you want to look better in the mirror. Maybe you want to build some muscle again. Or maybe you just want to feel proud of the man you see staring back at you.
The problem isn’t knowing what to do.
The problem is getting yourself to actually do it.
You’ve had stretches in the past where you were motivated. Maybe you made some progress. But then, life got in the way. You got busy. You got tired. And all that progress? It vanished. You slipped back into your old habits. It’s frustrating—and it’s discouraging. That back-and-forth cycle wears on you after a while.
The Real Price of Getting Fit (And Why You Can’t Overpay)
Here’s what I tell my one-on-one coaching clients:
Yes, there’s a price to pay for having a healthy, fit, energetic body. Just like there’s a price to pay for all great things in life.
But here’s the key:
You want to pay the price—but you don’t want to overpay the price.
Too much time in the gym, too much starving yourself, too much complexity—those things make your effort unsustainable. And even if you do see results, it might not feel worth it if you’ve overpaid with your energy, willpower, and time. You’ll just end up quitting. Again.
Staying motivated long-term requires efficiency. You need a strategy that’s effective and sustainable. That means filtering through all the noise online, ignoring the flashy extremes from 25-year-old influencers, and doing what actually works for you.

Why Information Alone Isn’t Enough
When men come to me for coaching, they already know a lot. They’ve watched the videos. They’ve read the blogs. They’ve listened to podcasts. But they’re still stuck. Why?
Because more information isn’t the answer.
The answer is execution. Consistency. Clarity. Structure. Accountability.
And that’s where I come in. I don’t just teach. I coach. I mentor. I hold men accountable for actually doing what they’ve learned. I walk them through it, week by week, hour by hour. And I don’t take on everyone—because I know the responsibility I’m taking on. I only work with men who are ready.
Four Keys to Long-Term Motivation
There are four major things you must have in place if you want to stay motivated—especially now that you’re older.
1. You Must Know Your REAL “Why”
“I want to be healthier” isn’t enough. Why does this matter now? Why is this time different? Why is this worth pushing through your exhaustion, your schedule, and your past failures?
If you’re not crystal clear on your “why,” motivation will fade fast.
When I coach men, I ask: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how important is this to you?”
If they say 7 or 8, I know they’re not ready. You need to be a 10. If not, you’ll find excuses.
2. You Need to Be Efficient—Not Obsessive
It’s not about doing everything “optimal.” It’s about doing what works for you. You don’t need to train seven days a week. You don’t need to eat perfectly. You need a plan that fits your life and delivers results—without burning you out.
The more efficient your plan is, the more likely you are to stick with it. Consistency beats perfection.
3. Your Standards Must Be HIGH Enough
Many men think they’re working hard. But their standards don’t match the results they want. Training four out of seven days might sound great—but is it enough to build the body you say you want?
If your standards aren’t high enough—and you don’t even realize it—you’ll start blaming your age, your testosterone, or your genetics. When the real issue is that your effort doesn’t match your ambition.
4. You Need Realistic Expectations
If you think you’re going to build 10 pounds of muscle in six months—or lose 20 pounds in a month—you’re setting yourself up for failure. That’s not how the body works, especially at this stage in life.
Unrealistic expectations crush motivation.
You need to know what’s truly possible—so that your results match your expectations, and you don’t quit halfway through.
It’s Not Just About “Trying Harder”
It’s about being smarter.
It’s about clarity, not chaos.
And it’s about doing what works for you.
Staying motivated doesn’t mean you feel fired up every single day. It means you have a system in place—a process that keeps you on track even when you don’t feel like doing it. That’s what I help my clients build. Systems. Strategies. And a strong foundation that will last.
Thank you for following along with these lessons. This was Lesson #11 of 30 Lessons in 30 Days. I’m here to help you do what you already know. Not just someday—but now.
Be sure to come back tomorrow for Lesson #12. And if you’re ready to get the personal guidance, structure, and accountability to finally get this handled—even if it’s just for that accountability—you know where to find me. I’m here to help.
