Lesson 22: Belly Fat, Man Boobs, Love Handles, Back Fat, and Lies: What the Fitness Industry Won’t Tell You – 30 Lessons In 30 Days

I’m Skip La Cour, and I’ve been doing this fitness thing for a very long time. I’ve coached thousands of men through the confusion, frustration, and the noise. I want to talk to you—not talk at you. I don’t care if you’ve been training for 20 years or 20 minutes. I’m not here to impress you with complicated science. I’m here to help you get results.

Let’s talk about fat loss.

No matter your age, your training history, or how disciplined you are in other areas of life, chances are high that the main reason you’re here—the reason you’re listening to me, the reason you’re reading this—is because you want to lose body fat.

Not just “get healthy” or “start a new chapter.”

No. You want that belly fat gone.

You want your clothes to fit better. You want to feel like yourself again—like that sharp, confident version of you that used to look back from the mirror.

For most men who come to me, especially those a little older with busy, productive lives, the story is the same. They’ve built businesses, raised families, tackled real-world problems—and in doing that, they let their fitness slip. Not because they’re lazy. Because they were prioritizing other people. Other responsibilities. They never stopped being men of value. But that gut? Those love handles? That creeping fat around the chest and back? Those do not reflect who they really are.

Now, they’re ready to reclaim that identity.

Let’s Connect! At the end of this article, you’ll have the chance to connect with me directly, get your most pressing questions answered, and receive personalized help. Just text me your picture and fill out the questionnaire at the bottom.

The Fat Loss Fantasy That Wastes More Time Than It Saves

Here’s the common trap that 90% of men fall into when they finally get serious about getting lean:

They want to skip ahead.

They’ve got 30, 40 pounds to lose. Maybe more. But instead of doing what works, they say, “Skip, how do I get rid of this belly fat right here?” Or, “How do I melt away this chest fat?” Or, “What can I do to tighten up these love handles?”

They’ve got urgency. I love that urgency.

But what they don’t have is an understanding of how body fat actually works. And that’s what gets them frustrated. That’s what gets them spinning their wheels.

Let me break it down as simply and clearly as I can.

You Cannot Spot-Reduce Fat. Ever.

It doesn’t matter what some dude with abs and a million followers says.

You cannot crunch away belly fat.
You cannot bench away chest fat.
You cannot twist and bend your love handles into oblivion.

That’s not how it works. Not at 25, not at 55.

The fat you’re trying to lose? It didn’t just show up last week. It built up over years—decades for some of you. It was the result of how much you were eating, how consistently you were eating too much, and not moving enough to create a calorie deficit. That’s it.

And the only way it’s coming off?

Through your diet.

Yes, resistance training is essential—for strength, mobility, stability, longevity. You must be lifting weights. At least 3 to 4 times a week. Not like a bodybuilder, but like a smart older man who’s serious about aging well. But you are not lifting to burn fat. You are lifting to build and maintain muscle as the fat comes off.

Here’s the Harsh Truth You’ve Got to Accept

The first place you gained fat is the last place it will come off.

That stubborn belly, chest, back—those will take time. Your arms and legs might “look fine” now, but trust me—when you really start dropping fat, they’ll look leaner, more defined, and more athletic than you ever thought possible. You just don’t realize how much fat is there until it’s gone.

Why So Many Men Still Get It Wrong (Even After Years in the Gym)

Look, I get it.

You see a guy on YouTube with shredded abs selling an “ab-shredding routine.” He swears it got him that six-pack. He believes it. But what he’s not telling you is:

  • He was already lean.

  • His results came from eating right.

  • He could’ve done zero ab work and still had abs.

These influencers? They either believe their own hype—or they know that if they can sell you hope in the form of a targeted routine, you’ll buy it. Because that belly fat makes you desperate. Because that chest fat embarrasses you. And they know you want something—anything—to fix it fast.

But I’m not here to sell you false hope. I’m here to give you the truth, even if it’s hard to hear.

So, What Should You Do?

Start now.

Dial in your eating. Focus on consistency, not perfection. Track your calories. Create a moderate deficit. Learn how to eat in a sustainable way for your life. And while you’re doing that, start lifting weights with purpose. Build the habits that will serve you now and 10 years from now.

No, it won’t happen in 3 weeks. But in 3 months, you could be a different man.

Accountability is the Difference Between Knowing and Doing

You can understand everything I just said and still not follow through. Why?

Because life is hard. Change is uncomfortable. And going it alone is even harder.

That’s why I offer one-on-one coaching.
