I’m Skip La Cour, and I’m coming to you with passion and energy for Lesson #7 of my 30 Lessons in 30 Days series! Over the years, I’ve worked exclusively with men who are a little older, helping them build muscle, lose body fat, and get in the best shape of their lives without letting fitness take over their busy, productive lifestyles. I understand the unique physical, mental, and emotional challenges we face, and my goal with this series is to give you a deeper understanding of what actually works. Today, we’re tackling a big topic: Nutritional Supplements.
What You Need to Know About Supplements
If you’re a man who is a little older, chances are you’ve heard about the “magic” of nutritional supplements. Maybe you’ve seen ads promising rapid muscle gain, fat loss, or a solution to joint pain. You might feel like taking supplements is a necessary part of getting in shape. But here’s the truth:
You don’t need supplements to build muscle, lose body fat, or improve your health.
The supplement industry thrives on passionate people who want results, and they know how to sell a dream. But the reality is, proper training, nutrition, and consistency will give you 99% of your results. Supplements are just that—supplements to an already well-structured fitness plan.
The Supplements That Matter (and the Ones That Don’t)
1. Protein Powder
- You don’t need protein powder to build muscle, but it can be a convenient way to hit your protein intake.
- If you struggle to get enough protein from whole foods, a good-quality whey or plant-based protein can help.
2. Creatine
- Creatine is one of the few supplements with decades of research supporting its effectiveness.
- It helps with muscle fullness, strength, and endurance.
- You don’t need it, but it’s one of the few that actually works if you choose to take it.
3. Testosterone Boosters
- Most over-the-counter testosterone boosters do nothing to increase testosterone levels significantly.
- If you are concerned about low testosterone, get bloodwork done and consult a doctor.
4. Joint Supplements
- Many older men deal with joint pain, and supplement companies know this.
- Some men swear by glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen, but the best solution is proper training and mobility work.
5. Pre-Workouts
- Most pre-workout supplements are just caffeine and other stimulants.
- If you want an energy boost, black coffee is a much cheaper option.
6. BCAAs and Amino Acids
- If you’re eating enough protein daily, you don’t need these at all.
- They’re marketed heavily, but they don’t provide additional benefits if your diet is solid.

The Biggest Mistake Older Men Make with Supplements
One of the biggest mistakes I see men make is believing supplements will fix what proper training and nutrition won’t. They assume that because they’re working out hard, they need to take every supplement under the sun. But the truth is, the results come from the consistency, discipline, and knowledge you apply in the gym and the kitchen—not a bottle of pills or powders.
I know this firsthand. I used to be sponsored by major supplement companies, and I took everything they offered because it was free. But now, at 62 years old, with 36 years of experience, I take zero supplements and still maintain great health and fitness. Why? Because I focus on the fundamentals.
Final Thoughts: Where to Put Your Energy
- If you’re trying to get in shape, don’t waste time chasing magic pills.
- Focus on progressive resistance training, proper nutrition, and recovery.
- Use supplements only as a convenience, not as a necessity.
