I know this article might ruffle a few feathers, and I want to start by acknowledging that. If you’re someone who has made the decision to go on Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), I’m not here to criticize you. Your life, your choices. I sincerely wish you the best on your journey, and I fully support you doing whatever you feel is best for your health and happiness. That being said, this message isn’t necessarily for you.
This article is for those men who are on the fence, trying to decide whether or not TRT is the right path for them. Everywhere you look on the internet, there’s usually only one side of the argument being pushed. The benefits of testosterone replacement therapy are presented as if they are the ultimate solution, and everyone who isn’t on board is missing out. Well, I’m here to provide some perspective you might not be hearing elsewhere.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱?
Let me start with a question. How many times have you heard fitness people say, “Doctors just want to keep you on drugs to make money. They don’t want to teach you the cure without medicine because they profit from your illness”? It’s a common argument, especially when it comes to nutrition and fitness advice. But why doesn’t that logic apply when it comes to TRT?
If you’re one of those men who have held this belief about doctors and other forms of medicine, why is it different when testosterone is involved? Could it be that the same financial motivations apply here too? Prescription medications like TRT generate steady income, and some doctors are quick to prescribe it—especially when the patient is willing to pay out of pocket or has great insurance. I’m not saying doctors are evil or out to get you, but human nature and financial incentives can definitely play a role.
𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗼
One of the biggest reasons men get interested in TRT is because they’re constantly reminded of how much their testosterone drops as they age. “You’re not the same man you were at 30,” they’ll say. And yeah, it gets in your head.
Let me ask you something: When you were in your 20s or early 30s, did you ever look in the mirror and think, “I don’t have enough muscle” or “I’m not as lean as I want to be”? I bet you did. I did too, and so did most of the men I talk to. The reality is that this struggle—wondering if you have the right training routine, the right eating plan, and questioning whether what you’re doing is going to give you the results you want—never really goes away.
The battle to build muscle, lose body fat, and stay in shape is an ongoing process, no matter how much testosterone you have. So before you even start considering TRT, ask yourself: Have you really learned how to train and eat properly? Do you understand progressive overload and nutrition in a way that maximizes your muscle-building potential without shortcuts? Because injecting hormones isn’t going to solve that mental battle. It might boost you up a few rungs on the ladder, but the ladder itself remains the same.
𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀
Most men who consider TRT are focused on the muscle-building aspect, but testosterone affects far more than just your physical appearance. It influences your mood, your decision-making, and yes—your emotional stability.
Have you ever thought about why testosterone levels naturally decline as we age? Sure, we don’t want to feel sluggish or lose our edge, but there’s something to be said for the wisdom that comes with age. Testosterone in younger men is often associated with aggression, impulsive decision-making, and an insatiable sexual drive. Do you really want to bring that mindset into your 50s or 60s when you’re in a different phase of life?
I’ve talked to men who regret some of the decisions they made when they were younger—decisions fueled by high testosterone levels. Now, with the benefit of hindsight and lower testosterone, they see things differently and make better choices. If you artificially raise your levels, are you going to bring back that impulsiveness and emotional volatility? It’s worth considering before you make the jump.
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀—𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺
Another thing I hear a lot is that TRT is presented as this magical solution with no downsides. It always works, and it’s always beneficial, right? Wrong. I’ve worked with men who have been on TRT for six months, and they’re still waiting for it to “kick in.” Others have gone off it, wondering why they ever started in the first place. If it were as clear-cut as it’s often made out to be, why would people have second thoughts?
I know what the TRT advocates will say—“You didn’t get the right dose” or “You didn’t do it long enough.” But when everything comes down to more and more of a substance to fix a problem, doesn’t that sound a bit like chasing something that might never deliver the promises you’ve been sold?
𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆
We’re all familiar with the phrase “follow the money.” And in the medical world, this definitely applies. Doctors are human beings like the rest of us, influenced by the same financial pressures. Many of them have loans to pay off, lifestyles to maintain, and insurance companies to deal with. If they can stack 100 clients at $200 a month for TRT, that’s a reliable income stream.
But what about the men who don’t have great insurance or can’t afford the ongoing cost? Suddenly, their testosterone levels are “fine,” and the doctor isn’t as quick to prescribe TRT. Funny how that works, isn’t it?
𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀…
Look, I’m not a doctor, and I’m not trying to play one. I’m speaking from 62 years of life experience and a deep understanding of human behavior, especially as it pertains to health and fitness. Science isn’t always as black-and-white as we’re led to believe, especially when money and biases are involved.
So, before you jump on TRT because it’s what you keep hearing on the internet, think about whether you’ve exhausted all other options. Do you really understand how to train and eat to maximize your potential? Are you ready for the psychological changes that could come with artificially raising your testosterone levels? And most importantly, are you sure that the decision you’re making is based on what’s best for you—and not what someone else is trying to sell you?
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but it’s one that needs to be said. If you’ve already made the decision to go on TRT, I wish you nothing but success. But if you’re still undecided, I hope this has given you a perspective you might not have considered. There’s more to life, and your fitness journey, than just your testosterone levels.
